The lush greenery of the Great Forest stretched away all around, giving the illusion that all was well on the planet Mobius. Massive red woods swayed gently in the breezes that swept the carpet of leaves below her feet. Somewhere in her past, someone had told Amy Rose about the layers of a forest, how the sea of green that she saw now was called the forest's canopy. As she saw it now, the emerald canopy was completely peaceful and protective. Amy Rose knew better, however. Hidden beneath that canopy lurked Sonic. Sonic, her life-long crush and his Freedom Fighters. And Sally. Damned forest... she hated it. She hated it for hiding Sonic from her, for keeping him away from her. Beyond the forest lay Robotropolis, where the latest dictator ruled the planet. Packbell, the robotic son of Robotnik, was that most current dictator. Between him and Sonic was a war for freedom, a revolution in which countless lives had been lost. The war that had devastated so much of Mobius, and had destroyed her home on the Little Planet, one of Mobius's stranger moons. That war had touched almost everyone on Mobius, even those who lived on the Floating Island. The scars of war lingered on her new home in the sky. Indeed, her feet dangled from the side of that island, a faint air current from under the continent caressing her ankles. It was over the side of her sky bound home which she was gazing, her eyes trained on the forest she hated, seeking some sign that Sonic did exist in that mass of green. Of course, she wouldn't find it. Knothole was hidden... if she saw a sign, it meant death for everyone there. Amy kept looking, hating herself for wishing it. A gloved hand touched her shoulder lightly, by way of greeting. Amy smiled faintly as Knuckles took a seat next to her. Together, his arm still on her shoulder, they stared over the side of Floating Island. For a time, the only sound was the wind rustling the trees and mussing their quills. "So," Knuckles began, breaking the silence, "You had the dream again, huh?" His voice was soft and caring, coaxing her to speak her mind. Some of the other new Chaotix believed them to be an item, but they weren't. Knuckles merely recognized her need for a friend, and was being that friend. Amy Rose looked up from the surface, facing Knuckles. She blinked twice, shyly, feeling about as transparent as a picture window. He had always been able to see right through her. He even had the consideration not to point out her hatred of... of the Forest. Of what kept Sonic from her. Slowly, Amy nodded. "Even since facing Chaos and Order..." she murmured, "I've seen them... the three castouts from Haven. I don't know how to explain..." Lost souls, wandering through eternity. Their pain echoed through her mind, reflecting her own pain. She was a cast out too... from her home, from Sonic's freedom fighters. A tear dripped from her eye, sliding down her cheek. Knuckles brushed the tear away with a gloved finger. She tried to smile as she took his hand. He gave her hand a light squeeze, trying to reassure her. "I'm sure its nothing." he whispered. *Incorrect.* Knuckles and Amy jumped slightly as the voice boomed through their minds, Knuckles unconsciouncly pulling Amy closer to himself. Together, they scrambled to their feet, stepping away from the edge as a trio of giant Masks formed in the sky before them. "The Ancient Walkers!" Knuckles hissed to Amy, by way of narration. "What do they want?" Amy squeaked, cringing against Knuckle's side. Now he noticed their proximity. Knuckle's mind took a moment to think about how nice it felt to have Amy so close; but he quickly dismissed the thought so he could concentrate on the matter at hand. "I'm not sure," Knuckles admitted, "but they helped me once before." A slight understatement... they'd saved the entire Floating Island from a fatal overload. *Exactly.* one of the Walkers boomed, *And thus you owe a debt. Now, you shall repay it.* *A task lays before you,* another stated, *A quest!* The bird-looking Walker looked practically excited by the prospect. Knuckles wasn't nearly as jovial. "Another one?" he demanded of the Walkers, "I just got done questing for the Master Emerald with Sally and Amy!" And Sonic, but he could care less about that blue annoyance. *You must seek the Dagger of Arakkis.* the third Walker, a toothy light-bulb-shaped mask, stated, ignoring Knuckle's protests. "Arakkis?" Knuckles asked, genuinely taken aback, "The Holy Man who objected to Kayla-la's plan to save Floating Island? He left years ago, before the Island took off!" Since becoming the guardian, Archimedes had been bothering him to learn Echidna history. The fact that he had been able to recall the specifics of that name brought a faint smile to his lips. The old ant would be glad to know that something was sinking in. *So must you, for now.* the first Walker thought at him. It took a second for Knuckles to place it with his comment about Arakkis leaving. *Upon the world below,* the Walker continued, *you shall encounter a Wizard, a Sorcerer, and a Vigilante. They point the way to the place of beginnings.* *Follow the path.* the second, Bird-beak, called as the three masks began to recede into the distance, *And follow she who bled.* "ME?!?" Amy shrieked. Knuckles had actually been thinking Sally, or maybe that weird cat, but the Walkers paused. *Yes.* the third Walker, buck-tooth, confirmed. *You shall light the way.* Without further adu, the Ancient Walkers vanished on the horizon. "Another quest..." Amy murmured, looking somewhat green. Knuckles, who'd stepped away from her sometime during the debate with the Walkers, moved over and put a reassuring arm around her. "Yup." he said with a sigh, "Lets go find Mighty. He and the others have got fill-in duty again." Together, they walked back to the Hidden Palace. *** Everything had been arranged. Mighty was guarding the Emerald itself while Espo, Vector, and Charmy patrolled the island. Charmy was also pulling double duty to keep the Chaotix trainees working. They would also be guarding the Emerald, in shifts, and doing a little patrolling. Amy Rose and Knuckles had both been provided with packs. They had plenty of food and supplies. Knuckles had even taken a few hours to meditate on the subject (not that he'd bothered to confide in her!). As much as Amy searched her mind, she could think of nothing else they needed to do... Except for getting to the surface of Mobius. "I HATE THIS!!!" Amy wailed as Knuckles leapt off the side of Floating Island. She took a moment to check her dreadlock clasps before jumping after him, letting fly with a good scream. Every time she did this, she was sure something'd go wrong and her clasped-quills wouldn't catch the air, and she'd go plunging to a messy and all together untimely demise. However, as always, Knuckles had styled her quills perfectly; they caught the air, sending her gliding out above the Great Forest. Amy Rose breathed again. "You all right?" Knux asked, grinning at her as he coasted along side her. She huffed, sticking her tongue out at him. Amy hated to travel like this, and he knew it! Hedgehogs were not meant to fly.. or have dreadlocks! But, any quilled Chaotix had to learn, so she'd learned. That was probably the ONLY good thing about it... she had done this before, so wasn't completely terrified. "Where're we going, anyway?" Amy asked, trying to pretend they were merely coasting down from one of the Mountains on Floating Island, and not falling a few miles to the surface. "You never told me what you got from your meditations!" She tried not to be harsh with Knuckles, but nausea was making her less that good company. "The Great Forest." Knuckles stated, "About a hundred miles north of Knothole. When I meditated on Wizards, I got a little vision of this hut." "Let me guess," Amy piped up, "and the trees around the house were mixed snow pines and red woods." A combination which meant northern Great Forest, near the border with the Frozen North. Red woods grew almost exclusively in the Great Forest, so it was a good bet. "Bingo." Knuckles confirmed, grinning. "You're learning fast." Amy blushed slightly. She had worked hard, but it hadn't been to become a good Chaotix. She wanted to impress Sonic, to show him that she was just as smart and pretty as that squirrel. Then, he'd fall for her, for sure! Or so she'd hoped. After their recent encounter with Chaos, she wasn't so sure. Sonic and Sally were... close. Terribly close. "So, we're heading north." Amy stated, trying to put on a happy face. The setting sun was making almost impossible to judge Knuckles' emotions anymore... he was silhouetted by the light. She shaded her eyes, but was merely greeted by a placidly smiling poker face. "Northward and downward." Knuckles said, nodding. Fall from Haven, part 1. A commotion moved through the hall ways of Haven. Three generations of Guardians ran towards a special type of hospital located therein. Haven, the last remnant of Echidnopolis, was also seemingly the last remnant of Echidna technology. But, sometimes it didn't take technology to make miracles happen. "Quadruplets?" Guardian Harkon asked, not truly believing the news. His wife nodded, looking thoroughly exhausted. Her midwife, yet another generation of Guardian; his mother, nodded too. "I remember having you." Guardian Rautha-fe said, smiling at her son, "Shame on you for putting this poor girl through four times the labor!" There were smiles all around... the new father, mother, grandmother, great grandfather, and great great grandfather all felt a sudden odd joy. It was not often that a guardian had more than one child. Infact, it was nearly unheard of. "So... which of them was first?" Harkon asked, looking at the four Echidna eggs in their sterile-eco incubator. "The one on the far left." Rautha-fe stated, "He or she will be the next Guardian. As for the others..." "They will remain with their mother, in Haven." Guardian Stilgar, Rautha-fe's father, stated. "Maybe they will help solve the problem of dwindling population." All four guardians, and the wife of a guardian, nodded together. While the eldest followed the hard path of a Guardian, his siblings would know a carefree life in Haven. To be continued...
